A harsh lesson for UK lottery winner

April 23rd, 2010

Imagine the feeling in this chap’s stomach when the penny dropped that he had just thrown away his ticket to £100K! An innocent mistake it may be, but a very costly one indeed!

Remembering to purchase your ticket and check your numbers is a hassle to many and puts people off the idea of playing. This is one of the key advantages to playing the EuroMillions with GLUTO, as we organise the purchase of tickets, distribute the winnings, etc, in other words ensuring incidents, like what happened to Cemal, never occur.

Unlucky Cemal!

Cynthia Stafford: An example to us all

April 2nd, 2010

It is always fascinating to read about how lotteries can drastically change the lives of winners for the better – trading in the council flat for a multi-million pound/dollar/euro mansion in a wealthy neighbourhood, or splashing out on a fancy new car or two. However, rarely is it that we hear, or celebrate, those who give back to their community and use their new found fortune to benefit others, as opposed to treating themselves.

Cynthia Stafford won a $112 million in the California Lottery three years ago, and since then has dedicated her life and wealth to giving back to the community and the underprivileged. Even before her win, Cynthia was always generous and big supporter of UNICEF.

“If you want to do good for others, start now,” she says. “Don’t wait for the perfect time, because it doesn’t exist. Don’t wait until you have a certain amount of money in the bank, because giving back is not all about money. You can always give of yourself, your time, your services, your energy, and your talents.”

UK National Lottery operator sold to Canadian pension fund

March 26th, 2010

Camelot has been sold for £400 million to a Canadian pension fund called the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. Speculation has been rife in recent weeks as to who would gain hold of the lottery operator. So much so, that we posted an article a few weeks ago, when rumours had it that Camelot was in talks with French Lottery group Francaise des Jeux. However this never seemed to flourish.

Read the article here

Camelot had been running the National Lottery since 1994 when it received its licence. While this is important news in the lottery world, it is also another British business which is now owned by a foreign entity. Who is next we wonder?

‘EuroMillions winners’ to be UK television soap stars?

March 16th, 2010

Due to its ever growing popularity, it is claimed that the EuroMillions Lottery is now being written into the script of Emmerdale, a well known television soap on UK television. A new cast of members are set to join the show as a family who have won the EuroMillions jackpot, however, they are said to be far from generous with their wealth. Instead, insiders claim they are to be a bunch of “boozed-up troublemakers” looking to cause “mayhem.” Makes for interesting viewing!

The British soap has been running since 1972, and wants to be the first ever to introduce such characters into a script.

I wonder where next the EuroMillions will appear in pop culture…..

Putting Derren Brown’s ‘magic’ into practice

March 11th, 2010

You may recall Derren Brown’s infamous ‘Lottery trick’ back in September last year. Followed by 2.7 million TV viewers, the illusionist explained how he could predict the numbers drawn in the upcoming EuroMillions lottery – a trick that certainly amazed the whole country and got people thinking.

Derren said that he had used a method dating back several centuries, a method primarily used at cattle shows to guess the weight of an animal.

Derren Brown’s explanation

The theory goes something like this: A group of people each guess the weight of an animal, the average of all the guesses are then likely to be correct. For example, some might guess a Black Angus cow weighs 1,200 pounds, others 1,400 pounds. As such, the likely weight should probably be in the area of 1,300 pounds.

Derren Brown claims to have used the exact same method to forecast the winning combination. He had a group of 24 people, each guessing the first, second, third, fourth and fifth main numbers in EuroMillions. He then took the average of each of the main numbers suggested.

You can believe in this method or not, but it is one way of choosing the lucky numbers to play. One might argue that this method is as good as another, but at least this is more fun than re-using the trivial birthday numbers!

Putting Derren’s strategy into practice

With Gluto.com, this theroy can somewhat be replicated, but on a much larger scale. In our Beta Syndicate, each member suggests their own set of numbers to be played in the following draw, and the average of all suggestions will then be the final combination that the syndicate participates with. No illusions necessary!

Lottery money to get students ‘away’ from the pub!

March 10th, 2010

A student sport!

Talk about stereotypes – a British university student. Where are they most likely to be found? Down the local pub, where the warm watered down beer costs 2 quid, or at the kebab shop for dinner! I should know…..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/8558162.stm

“The poll of students at universities in England conducted last week suggested those in the East of England spent most time in the bar – an average of 405 minutes in the pub per week compared to 238 minutes on a sports pitch per week.”

Well, its time for change! Lottery money is going to be funding a big push to get these lazy students out of the pubs and back on the pitches! Good luck I say!
